There's a really good reason you should move indoors when the weather turns sour. Remember, lightning doesn't have to strike the same place twice for you to get in trouble. One strike is enough to send you to the hospital, with potentially fatal consequences.
The video above was captured by a camera crew in Darwin, Australia. According to William Nguyen-Phuoc, the YouTube user (and photographer) who posted this fantastic close up with mother nature, says the bolt was only 200 to 250m away! For those of us not comfortable with the metric system, that's just over 800 feet! While I am extremely thankful for the extreme and experienced storm chasers/photographers who capture videos like this, I wouldn't recommend attempting to recreate this situation. When lightning is in your area, MOVE INDOORS! Mother Nature is gorgeous, but also very dangerous and you definitely don't want to end up on her bad side. |
